Public History Munich

We relate our city’s history together with others. As part of Munich’s ‘Kulturreferat’ (Department of Arts and Culture), we research into, promote and communicate the diversity of the city’s culture of remembrance.

In cooperation with dedicated local residents, institutions and partners, we fuse historical retrospection with contemporary issues. We seek to strengthen social cohesion through academically-based cultural initiatives.

Our city and its history have been shaped by migration. Our focus is on researching Munich’s history of migration since 1945.

1945–2025 ‘Zero Hour?’

Schwarzweißfoto einer historischen Stadtansicht, leicht bewölkter Himmel. Die Gebäude sind stark beschädigt, teils sind es Ruinen oder Überreste abgerissener Gebäudeteile. Links hinter einer zerstörten Gebäudefassade ragen die Türme der Münchner Frauenkirche hoch. In der rechten Bildhälfte ist ein Gebäude vollkommen zerstört. In dieser Lücke ragt zwischen halbzerstörten Grundmauern der Turm des Neuen Münchner Rathauses empor. Im Vordergrund Geröll. Mehrere Grüppchen von überwiegend erwachsenen Menschen sind in Bewegung oder drängen sich um improvisierte Verkaufsstände unter Planen und Schirmen. Die meisten tragen lange Kleidung oder lange Strümpfe. Die Fotografie zeigt das Rosental in München nach Ende des zweiten Weltkriegs.
Liberation from Nazi rule was not an abrupt act or ‘zero hour’, but required years of effort.
